Artificial intelligence, Gamification, Language learning, Teacher strategy, Teacher trainingAbstract
This systematic review examines how artificial intelligence (AI) and its combination with gamification impact the training of future teachers of English as an additional language (EAL) at university level. Twelve scientific articles published between 2019 and 2024 in Wos, Scopus and Eric were analysed, including the use of mobile apps and platforms with AI-based chatbots. The results highlight that AI, through various tools, improves the personalisation of learning and fosters student motivation. Gamification is identified as an effective resource for increasing student participation and engagement. However, ethical concerns and the need to improve the accuracy of AI tools, as well as the preparation of teachers for their effective use, are noted. The article concludes that while the integration of AI and gamification in teacher education has great potential, its success depends on thoughtful implementation and adequate training of teachers in the use of these technologies. Recommendations are offered for future research and educational practices that seek to optimise the use of AI and gamification in language teaching.
