Developing emotional intelligence by programming. A study of innovation in primary education

The development of emotional intelligence (EI) skills allows for healthy emotional development. However, there are no studies that have implemented and evaluated EI programs in primary education. This study aims to implement an EI educational innovation proposal using gamified activities during the programming process with Scratch with elementary school students. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with pre-post intervention evaluation of EI in a group of 100 students from two schools in Catalonia. All participants were between 9 and 11 years old and carried out a proposal called "Encoding Emotion" to work on EI using Scratch. This proposal consisted of 11 sessions divided into 6 activities to work on: intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, stress management, adaptability and mood. When comparing the scores obtained pre-post intervention, significant differences were obtained in the interpersonal dimension (p=0.014) and difficulties in stress management (p=0.020). Linear regression results showed that the number of sessions conducted and the pre-intervention score were the main predictors of the post-intervention total EI score. Gamification and the use of platforms such as Scratch are effective resources that allow working on different dimensions of EI in primary education.
