The aim of this study is to situate the current pandemic of misinformation following another health pandemic caused by COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning of what they have called an infodemic. The European authorities have taken measures to combat this situation which are analysed as a whole.
The use of social networks to spread mass disinformation to certain population groups is a matter of concern to the authorities. It may lead to a deterioration in our democracies because it is an obstacle to decision-making by citizens and also because it may lead to a decrease in confidence in the institutions and in both digital and traditional media. Another challenge facing Europe is the misinformation coming from countries outside the EU such as China or Russia. In the face of this infodemy, proposals are made such as improving digital literacy and empowering fact checkers.
