Este artigo aborda parte dos resultados do projeto de pesquisa que tem como meta propor melhorias aos cursos a distância do IFRN na adequação do ambiente virtual de aprendizagem institucional aos estilos de aprendizagem individuais dos discentes. Pretende-se verificar como essa aliança pode propiciar um ambiente favorável à partilha e construção de conhecimento. Para isso, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa com o intuito de mapear os recursos e atividades existentes no ambiente virtual em conformidade com o estilo de aprendizagem de um público distinto. Os resultados obtidos são explanados assim como uma revisão bibliográfica elucidando os principais conceitos acerca do tema: estilos de aprendizagem, Ambientes Virtuais de Aprendizagem, material didático para educação a distância, Objetos de Aprendizagem e sua taxonomia.
